Between February and June of 1924, Morihei Ueshiba accompanied Deguchi Onisaburo, head of the Omoto religious sect, to Inner Mongolia to survey a site in the Xing'an district in which to establish a holy land that would be the center for all religions as well as the basis of a new world socio-political order. The trip was made at risk to their lives as conditions were violent and unstable throughout the region. While enroute, accompanied by a band of soldiers known as the Inner and Outer Mongolia Independence Army, they were attacked several times by Chinese Nationalist soldiers as well as groups of mounted bandits. In the mountain passes before Tongliao, they were ambushed from all sides. Morihei, believing that death was inevitable, prepared himself for the end. But as he faced the hail of bullets, he was filled with a sudden calmness and, without moving from his position, he avoided the oncoming bullets by a slight shifting of the body. He escaped not only uninjured but completely untouched. The Founder later recounted this incident in his own words:
- I couldn't move from where I stood. So when the bullets came flying towards me, I simply twisted my body and turned my head. Soon, when I concentrated my vision, I could intuitively tell from which direction the enemy would fire, aiming from the right or pointing their rifles from the left. I could see pebbles of white light flashing just before the bullets. I avoid them by twisting and turning my body, and they barely missed me. This happened repeatedly with barely time to breathe but suddenly I had an insight into the essence of budo. I saw clearly that the movements in martial arts come alive when the center of ki is concentrated in one's mind and body and that the calmer I became, the clearer my mind became. I could intuitively see the thoughts, including the violent intentions, of the other. The calm mind is like the quiet center of a spinning top; because of the calm center, the top is able to spin smoothly and rapidly. It almost seems to be standing still. This is the clarity of mind and body (sumi-kiri) that I experienced.
- It was nothing. Just a matter of clarity of mind and body. When the opponent atacked, I could see a flash of white light, the size of a pebble, flying before the sword. I could see clearly that when a white light gleamed, the sword would follow immediately. All I did was avoid the streams of white light.
- I set my mind on budo when I was about 15 and visited teachers of swordsmanship and jujutsu in various provinces. I mastered the secrets of the old traditions, each within a few months. But there was non one to instruct me in the essence of budo; the only thing that could satisfy my mind. So I knocked on the gates of various religions but I couldn't get any concrete answers. Then in the spring of 1925, if I remember correctly, when I was taking a walk in the garden by myself, I felt that the universe suddenly quaked, and that a golden spirit sprang up from the ground, veiled my body, and changed my body into a golden one. At the same time my mind and body became light. I was able to understand the whispering of the birds, and was clearly aware of the mind of God, the Creator of this universe. At that moment I was enlightened: the source of budo is God's love--the spirit of loving protection for all beings. Endless tears of joy streamed down my cheeks. Since that time I have grown to feel that the whole earth is my house and the sun, the moon and the stars are all my own things. I had become free from all desire, not only for position, fame and property, but also to be strong. I understood, "Budo is not felling the opponent by our force; nor is it a tool to lead the world into destructions with arms. True budo is to accept the spirit of the universe, keep the peace of the world, correctly produce, protect and cultivate all beings in Nature." I understood, "The training of budo is to take God's love, which correctly produces, protects and cultivates all things in Nature, and assimilate and utilize it in our own mind and body.
